List of Characters:
Romeo- He is the son of Montague and appears to be liked in Verona. Romeo is around the age of 16. He falls in love with Juliet and proceeds to marry her. He is a tragic character and is characterized as being young, hasty and emotional.
Juliet- She is a Capulet who falls in love with Romeo. She is a naïve child and often times rebellious towards her parents. Even though she is only thirteen years old, she believes marriage should be for love. She is also characterized as hasty but in control of her emotions. She is a logical character, who often times think her actions through.
Lord Capulet- He is Juliet's father. He is strict, harsh, but a doting father. He wants what’s best for his daughter. But thinks she is to young to marry Paris, and advices him to stare at other women at the party.
Lady Montague- She is Romeo's mother. She abhors violence and later dies grieving for her son.
Lord Montague- He is Romeo's father. Lord Montague worries about his son being happy in the beginning of the play. He is stubborn and not willing to forgive, however, after his son's death, he realizes the pettiness of the quarrel with Capulet.
Paris- He is a kinsman of the Prince. He cares about Juliet and wishes to marry her.
Prince Escalus- He is Prince of Verona who provides for law and order. He wants to call a truce and end the family feud. The fact that he intervenes is significant as it indicates that the feud has reached the stage of having become a public issue and not just a domestic tragedy. After Tybalt is killed be banishes Romeo and orders the families to cease their feud.
Friar Lawrence- He is the Priest in Verona. He weds Romeo and Juliet hoping it will unite both families. Instead it causes fighting. He later gives Juliet a sleeping potion and helps Romeo. He is a man of good intentions. He knows that Romeo and Juliet being together can cause chaos but he still does it. He often times gives good advice to others.
Friar John- He is a Franciscan friar who was ordered by Friar Lawrence to deliver the news that Juliet was not dead, but Romeo never received the message.
The Nurse- She cared for Juliet during childhood. She wants Juliet to be happy but advises her to marry Paris. She is very talkative, fond of joking, and a comical figure.
Mercutio- He is a good friend of Romeos. He is related to the Prince. Who often times makes fun of others. He loves to fight, and wont hold back on fighting no matter what the consequences. He is often times uses sexual jokes. And is good on both sides of the families: Capulet and Montague.
Balthasar- He is a servant and a friend of Romeo. He tells Romeo of Juliet’s death.
Benvolio- He is a friend of Romeo and his cousin, who tries to bring Romeo out of his gloom. He is a peace keeper, who hates to fight. He explains to the Prince the situation of Tybalt's death.
Tybalt- He is a nephew of Lady Capulet. He has a bad temper and a skilled fencer. He is killed by Romeo.
Samson- He is a Capulet servant. Samson starts the fight in the first scene of the book with the Montague’s.
Gregory- He is a Capulet servant. Teams up with Samson in the beginning of the book, in a fight with the Montague’s.
Peter- Servant to Juliet's Nurse.
The Apothecary- A very poor shopkeeper who illegally sells poison to Romeo.
Abraham- Fights with Samson and Gregory in the beginning. He is a Montague.
